With the signing of an MOU with the K. Maafushi Council, STELCO has added the island to the list of Maldives islands striving toward sustainable waste management. The agreement signed between these two parties included an establishment of a modern waste management center with segregation and recycling facilities, making it the first company in the Maldives to take responsibility for waste management and most utility services of an island.
With the passing of the “Waste Management Bill” in January of this year, Maldives has been working towards managing waste in a more sustainable manner. Earlier this year the waste management company of the Maldives (WAMCO) had already started a waste segregation project along with the Ministry of Environment.
With Maafushi serving as STELCO's test site for entering the waste management industry, other islands are expected to follow if this initiative is successful.
Due to the close proximity to Male’, and with the introduction of local tourism in the island, Maafushi has become one of the more popular destinations in the Maldives. Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Council President emphasized the difficulties the island has faced managing waste ever since local tourism was established.
He also pointed out that the Council lacks the facilities necessary to handle the various types of waste that visitors produce on a daily basis.
With the launch of the waste management services, STELCO guarantees that problems with waste management on the island, such as waste accidentally spilling into the ocean during transportation, would be resolved.
