As the effects of climate change begin to affect parts of the world, small island nations like the Maldives have begun to take larger steps toward becoming more sustainable. As the Maldives watches larger neighbouring countries such as India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh struggle with the negative effects of climate change, the fear of what could happen to the Maldives is an impending threat in everyone's heart, as the Maldives is a low-lying nation that is constantly threatened by rising sea levels.

Several small businesses in the Maldives have already moved towards using eco-friendly packaging and minimising the usage of plastic in their packaging and products in order to minimise waste.  This initiative is also supported by the Government of the Maldives, as they work toward banning the usage of single-use plastic in the Maldives in an effort to minimise the production of non-disposable waste that could threaten the environment, especially the marine life in the Maldives.

As of late, this initiative has been picking up popularity among several resorts as well as big businesses in the Maldives as they have started incorporating sustainability in their business ventures. Several resorts in the Maldives as well as the hotel industry has been incorporating the usage of biodegradable products as well as integrating information regarding sustainability and its benefits whenever possible.

One such resort that has taken major steps in order to ensure sustainability on its island is Fushifaru Maldives located in Lhaviyani Atoll. On this island, single-use plastics are banned and gardening of flowers, fruits and vegetables is highly encouraged as a way to support the kitchen as well as be sustainable as it works towards an effort to produce zero-waste on the island. In addition to their ‘plant your own tree’ program, they also initiated a coral propagation program in an effort to regenerate corals in the area.

One of the things that the island focuses on the most, however, is its focus on using more sustainable alternatives. While the island already uses sustainable and bio-degradable products in most of its operations, on August 15 2022, Fushifaru launched the ‘plastic aa nulaa’ campaign as part of the resort's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). With big names such as Dhiraagu, Muni Group, Trans Maldivian Airways and the Hinnavaru council as the partners for this campaign, the campaign was carried out in order to raise awareness among the general public regarding the importance of using sustainable products in place of single-use plastic for the betterment of our environment.

“Sustainable development and environmental preservation are key priorities of the Maldivian government. The implementation of environmental policies will only work if our citizens, businesses and organizations work in unison to support them. On this note, I applaud Fushifaru’s commitment to helping keep our islands and oceans clean for future generations to come”
Minister of Tourism Dr. Mausoom

During the launching event of the ‘plastic aa nulaa’ campaign, Fushifaru Maldives donated over 100 reusable cloth bags to the community as well as launched the official awareness video that was created.
