With each passing year, people become more aware of the environmental impact of their actions, resulting in one of the most long-lasting movements to begin - becoming more environmentally conscious and sustainable. The overflow of information on sustainability and the harmful effects of pollution on the environment has had a significant impact, especially on low-lying countries such as the Maldives.

Within this year the Government of Maldives as well as the public have taken initiatives to reduce pollution and be more mindful of the environment. Measures such as waste segregation to reduce waste, banning the use of single-use plastic, and more fashion-forward steps such as using tote bags instead of plastic bags when shopping has been a large part of this year's waste pollution measures.

Also, the government has levied fines on organizations that dump waste into the ocean carelessly, while some private sector firms and NGOs have been working hard to spread information about waste pollution and ways to be more mindful.

While steps toward sustainability should have been taken years ago, it appears that people are finally becoming more aware of why we should be mindful of the environment, leading to more sustainable measures being taken at all levels.

However, when it comes to things that have a large impact on the world, each and every person must take steps and measures, and the biggest step towards sustainability and eco-friendliness begins at the government and organizational level.

Island Beverages Maldives (IBM), a subsidiary company of Male' Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC), appears to be catching up to the eco-friendly trend as they have launched two new environmentally friendly products under their brand Taza, one of the well-known brands in the Maldives. At a ceremony held at Hotel Jen on the 9th of August 2022, Tourism Minister Abdulla Mausoom launched the new products under a new campaign ‘Taza Veshi’.

With the aim of reducing, reusing and recycling the waste in order to clean up the effects of plastic pollution and reduce the usage of single-use plastic, the company has introduced Taza 5G – 18.9L and Taza glass bottles in the sizes of 500ml and 100ml.

Under the Taza Veshi campaign, which was launched to commemorate IBM's 20th anniversary, the company intends to conduct environmental awareness programs as well as beach clean-up programs.

While the Taza brand has been around for years and has become a household name, its approach to sustainability is a positive step towards Maldives’ aim to become a greener country!
