In a significant move to enhance its payment ecosystem, the Bank of Maldives has unveiled an exciting partnership with Weixin Pay, commonly known as WeChat Pay, to broaden its Point-of-Sale (POS) terminal network. This collaboration opens doors for merchants in the Maldives to seamlessly accept QR payments through the widely-used Chinese app, marking a notable milestone in the country's financial landscape.

Historically, WeChat Pay has been accessible exclusively through the BML Payment Gateway, but this recent announcement heralds a new era of convenience and accessibility for merchants and consumers alike. With WeChat Pay integration, businesses can now cater to the preferences of Chinese tourists and residents, tapping into a market segment that's increasingly vital for the Maldivian economy.

 We have started the rollout of WeChat Pay at merchants at Velana International Airport’s duty-free shopping. By accepting WeChat Pay on the Bank’s POS network, we are paving the way for more than 1 billion active users of the Weixin & WeChat platform to make payments at merchants across Maldives. Our aim is to continually enhance the payment experience for our customers and merchants. Today’s announcement means we are now able to offer our customers the choice and convenience to choose their preferred way to pay.

The Bank's existing array of accepted payment methods includes all major debit and credit cards such as American Express, Visa, Mastercard, and Union Pay. Moreover, digital wallets like BML Pay, Ali Pay, Apple Pay, and Google Pay have also found a home within the Bank's versatile payment ecosystem. This extensive range ensures that merchants can cater to diverse customer preferences, fostering seamless transactions and customer satisfaction.
