The pandemic has thrown personal health and safety into a global rethink, and insurance has become a key factor in deciding personal finances and future plans. Traveling has always been a global pastime and, the Maldives being arguably the most sought-out destination, travellers need a bridge of reassurance between the vacation experience and personal safety; Allied Insurance has stepped up to meet the challenge.

AlliedInbound is Maldives COVID-19 Insurance Plan, launched by Allied Insurance, to punctuate safety as a priority. Given the volatility of the health situation, COVID-19 precautions can only go so far, and a chance encounter might incur expenses beyond the budgets of travellers. This specifically curated insurance plan aims to alleviate those potential damages and worries in the minds of tourists.

The policies are structured around the possibilities of either testing COVID-19 positive or even facing quarantine situations, with three different packages, segmented into five price ranges based on duration of stay. The main elements covered under the insurance policy are well thought out and simple to follow.

Isolation Facility Charges are the first on the list, as the Health Protection Agency of the Maldives has clear cut guidelines as well as designated facilities for isolation in case of a positive result to a COVID-19 test. Daily expenses are covered at the limits prescribed for each plan, to ensure that the 14 days of isolation are dealt without further worry or distress. Following this, Emergency Medical Transportation or those visitors who are in resorts and island hotels to the nearest facility are also covered. The selected plan decides the price ranges for the transport provisions so that visitors can opt for their preferred mode of transport should the need arise.

Further medical expenses incurred due to the use of medical facilities, services, equipment, and medication are also covered to the maximum stipulated in the plans. The ranges start at USD75,000 to USD100,000 depending on the plan one prefers, for the duration of the isolation period. In the unfortunate event of a traveler’s demise due to COVID-19 complications, Mortuary and Burial Services, in the Maldives, are also covered.

Furthermore, upon exposure to a COVID-19 patient, the HPA requires a mandatory quarantine, and this insurance plan covers these expenses as well, similar to the isolation facility daily expenses. The quarantine facility must be one that is designated so by the HPA of the Maldives.

The fine print on the Allied Insurance Company website lists the most important information as follows:

The policy is only available to foreign passport holders visiting the Maldives as a tourist, who is neither a citizen of the Republic of Maldives nor holds a valid resident visa to reside in the Republic of Maldives.

This policy is available to all tourists irrespective of their age.

Tourists should purchase and activate the insurance prior to their arrival in the Maldives or on the date of arrival to the Maldives.

It is a condition precedent to liability of your policy that:

  • You should always be in compliance with the latest travel regulations/ directives imposed by the Government of the Maldives during your stay in the Maldives within your policy covered period, and
  • You (excluding children and infants who are not eligible for vaccination) must have completed prescribed dose(s) of COVID-19 vaccinations (any vaccine approved by the World Health Organization, Emergency Use Listing [EUL] or the Maldives Food and Drug Authority, or any other competent authority of the respective countries) 14 days prior to travel to the Maldives, or
  • You (excluding children aged less than one year) must either have a negative result for a Nucleic Acid Test (PCR test) of COVID-19 for which the sample has been taken within 96 hours prior to arrival to the Maldives.

Furthermore, there are also certain Policy Exclusions that have been helpfully described on the website:

  • Your own unlawful action or any criminal proceedings against you
  • Consequential losses of any kind
  • Loss by delay
  • Terrorism and war
  • Nuclear and radioactive risks
  • Your suffering from stress, anxiety, depression or any other mental or nervous disorder
  • Any non-medical charges incurred if your trip has to be extended
  • Any claim arising from a reason not listed in the ‘What is covered’ section (available on the website)

Such an all encompassing insurance option aims at reducing, as much as possible, the worry of flying into the Maldives by both being helpful in covering all the payments as well as ensuring that there are no worries in the back of one’s mind when enjoying the sun, sand, and sea. COVID-19 may have diminished in the spread in the Maldives enough for the health emergency to be retracted, but the procedures in place are still similar in the situation that an infection arises.

Allied Insurance provides further information and also FAQs on their website, with all necessary contact details for Customer Care. The insurance is also extremely easy to apply for, through their online application services, even on the same day of travel, before 12am. These reasons and more make this initiative by Allied Insurance both timely and necessary to further strengthen the safety of Maldives as a travel location.
