The Maldives Consulate General has urged Maldivians to exercise caution as a deadly infection spreads in Kerala, India. The disease, caused by the brain-eating amoeba, has been reported by Kerala's health authorities.
This news comes right after the Maldives experienced heightened fear just last month due to a detected case of meningococcal disease, which sadly led to the death of a Maldivian who returned after performing their Hajj pilgrimage. Although the public has been extra alert to diseases, especially viral conditions ever since the COVID-19 pandemic, it appears that Maldivians need to be a bit more cautious yet again. This is especially true as Kerala, India is a state that Maldivians often visit for medical reasons. According to the Maldives Consulate General, the infection manifests with symptoms such as headaches, fever, nausea, vomiting, neck stiffness, confusion, and seizures and if these symptoms are observed, immediate medical attention is recommended.
The brain-eating amoeba typically infects individuals through contaminated water entering the body via the nose or ears. The amoeba then travels to the brain, leading to severe health consequences. Due to this, the consulate advises against swimming in lakes and other freshwater bodies during this period. Even swimming pools can be potential sources of infection. Therefore, it's recommended to use ear plugs or nose clips to prevent water from entering the body while swimming.
