His Excellency Vice President Uz Hussain Mohamed Latheef has reaffirmed the Maldives’ support for the Global Development Initiative (GDI), calling for stronger partnerships among developing countries to build a more inclusive, resilient and sustainable future.
The Vice President made the remarks at the High-Level Meeting on the Global Development Initiative, hosted by the People’s Republic of China on the sidelines of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly.
In his remarks, the Vice President expressed appreciation to China for its continued efforts to advance the GDI. He underscored the importance of initiatives that support developing countries address persistent development challenges.
The Vice President highlighted the longstanding development partnership between the Maldives and China and its contribution to the Maldives’ national development.
Addressing global development challenges, the Vice President noted that unsustainable debt constrains countries’ ability to invest in resilience. He also highlighted the threat climate change poses to development progress, particularly for Small Island Developing States (SIDS), and stressed the importance of COP31 delivering on climate commitments and translating them into meaningful climate action.
Highlighting the role of science, technology and innovation, including artificial intelligence, in advancing sustainable development, the Vice President expressed support for stronger international cooperation in capacity-building, technology transfer and knowledge-sharing.
Concluding his remarks, the Vice President called for greater solidarity among developing countries to address shared development challenges and advance a more inclusive, resilient and sustainable future.
