Tourism in The Maldives has grown by leaps and bounds in the past decade, with a large portion of that growth coming from people visiting the country for their honeymoon. In fact, honeymoon tourism has been a major driver of the industry's growth over the past several years as visitors from all over the world fancy their romantic getaway to the Maldives.

While this was a major factor driving the tourism industry in the Maldives, new forms of tourism being introduced to the country over time have also made the Maldives a popular destination among friends groups and families who plan their annual year-end trip to the Maldives.

After the global COVID-19 pandemic hit, the Maldivian tourism industry seems to be taking off this year following several marketing efforts by industry professionals such as the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC). The goal set for this year was to attract 1.6 million visitors and now that we’re into the month of December, it appears that the Maldives might actually be able to accomplish this goal by the end of this year.

According to the most recent statistics by the Maldives’ Ministry of Tourism, by the end of November 2022, the number of arrivals has reached 1.4 million, meaning the Maldives is only 200,000 guests away from reaching the big goal for 2022.

Since the pandemic, the top tourist arrival to the Maldives has remained unchanged with arrivals from India taking the top spot followed by Russia.

As the Maldives marks 50 years in the tourism industry, the visitor rates of 2022 proved to be extremely impressive as November itself had a 28.8 percent increase compared to the previous year. And as we dive into December, 200,000 visitors might be an easy number for the Maldives to reach as the festive season is about to start up, meaning resorts are to be fully booked throughout this whole month as Christmas and New Year lay ahead!
