The Maldives’ tourism industry continues on a positive trajectory into the fourth month of 2025, with arrival rates showing a steady increase compared to the previous year. According to statistics published by the Ministry of Tourism as of 9th April 2025, tourist arrivals have increased by 5.7 percent, reaching a total of 693,949 visitors this year.
These numbers highlight the strong recovery of the tourism sector since the COVID-19 lockdowns, which had a global negative impact. As of April 9th, 2025, this year has recorded the highest number of arrivals for the month of April since 2022. Statistics show that between 2022 and 2024, arrivals from 1st to 9th April ranged between 476,000 and slightly over 656,000. With a total of 693,949 arrivals in the first nine days of April 2025, the rapid recovery and success of the tourism industry are clearly reflected in the numbers.
In addition to April, both March 2025 and January 2025 also recorded higher arrival numbers compared to the past three years, while February 2025 saw a slight decline with a 1.5 percent decrease compared to February 2024.
The statistics further reveal that 69.7 percent of total arrivals stayed at resorts, while 24.8 percent opted for guesthouses. Meanwhile, 2.9 percent chose hotels, and 2.5 percent stayed in tourist vessels. These figures highlight the growth of local tourism in recent years, as budget travelers and those interested in exploring the local side of the Maldives have increasingly chosen to stay on local islands rather than at luxury resorts. Guesthouses have become particularly popular among travelers staying in local islands or the Greater Malé City area, whereas hotels remain a preferred choice for layover travelers.
Regarding arrivals by nationality, China continues to lead with 78,285 arrivals by April 9th, accounting for 11.3 percent of the total. Russia, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Germany follow closely, with India, France, the United States, Switzerland, and Poland rounding out the top 10 source markets for the Maldives.
