Maldives has been noted as one of the premium tourist destinations for a long time now. This title, however, was further highlighted following the COVID-19 pandemic as more and more people from around the globe started visiting the country to explore its unique offerings. With this, the Maldives has been experiencing a successful tourist arrival rate with each passing year. As the country managed to reach 1.8 million tourist arrivals in 2023 alone, the country set an ambitious goal of 2 million arrivals for the year 2024.
According to statistics from the Ministry of Tourism, as of June 4, 2024, a total of 907,066 tourists have arrived in the Maldives, giving high hopes for yet another successful year of tourism in the Maldives. Although the tourist arrivals were bringing out fairly positive numbers, with the arrivals of 2024 being more positive than 2023, it appears that this off-season is hitting a bit harder as the arrivals for May and June of 2024 are lower compared to last year.
The first five months of the year saw over 100,000 arrivals each month, with February peaking at 217,392 tourist arrivals. This year, China has made a major comeback since the pandemic, marking its place as the top source market, contributing 11.3% of the total arrivals, followed by Russia and the United Kingdom. Notably, there has been a rise in tourists from emerging markets such as Italy, Germany, India, France, and the United States.
Currently, the Maldives operates 1,202 tourist facilities, including 182 resorts, 871 hotels and guesthouses, and 149 liveaboards, offering a total of 63,628 beds to accommodate visitors.
