The Maldives tourism industry appears to be heading into a successful year as the Tourism Ministry of the Maldives unveils that more than half a million tourists have arrived in the country by the end of the first quarter of the year alone.

Maldives has always been a trending tourist destination among travellers worldwide, with the country attaining titles at the World Travel Awards (WTA) each year. Although the country has always been a famed destination, the tourist arrivals in the Maldives have been fairly positive, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic, as the Maldives became one of the first countries to open up its doors to travellers. With this, travellers who were seeking a getaway from all across the globe discovered and fell in love with the Maldives all over again. It appears that this popularity among travellers is rising this year, as the country has welcomed 13 percent more tourists than in the same period last year.

By the 20th of March 2024, the Maldives has officially welcomed 529,547 travellers, marking high hopes for the tourist arrival goal of 2 million to reach by the end of the year. Even in 2023, the Maldives was able to welcome 1.8 million travellers, marking yet another successful year of tourism in the country.

One of the biggest changes that has been increasing the number of arrivals has been the resumption of travellers from China, after a three-year-long hiatus. As China opened up its borders, allowing travellers to discover the world post-pandemic, the Maldives officially welcomed Chinese travellers who had been ranked number one as the highest arrival prior to the pandemic. With this, Chinese arrivals have yet again reclaimed the top spot for arrivals in 2024, with Russia and Italy following closely behind.
