MACL celebrates Air India's 50th anniversary of its operations to the Maldives

Air India first launched its services to the Maldives on 21 February 1967, creating a long lasting route between India and the Maldives.

On 23 February 2026, the Maldives Airports Company Ltd. (MACL) marked the 50th anniversary of Air India's operations to the Maldives.

In order to mark this milestone, Velana International Airport welcomed flight AI2239 by a ceremonial water salute and special gestures of appreciation for arriving passengers. Air India first launched its services to the Maldives on 21 February 1967, creating a long lasting route between India and the Maldives. With the introduction of a route gapping the nations, India and the Maldives have welcomed a large number of travellers from both nations over the years.

With over 12,000 employees, connecting travellers to 79 destinations, Air India has been in service for 90 years. The airline was founded by JRD Tata, who also happens to be India’s first commercial pilot license-holder.
