Maafaru International Airport today marked a significant new chapter in its development journey with the inauguration of its new apron extension and the groundbreaking of the airport’s terminal building extension, reinforcing its growing role as a strategic international gateway in the northern Maldives.

The milestone event, held at Maafaru International Airport in Noonu Atoll, brought together representatives from Island Aviation Services Limited (IASL), project partners, contractors, and invited guests, reflecting the collaborative effort behind the airport’s continued transformation and long-term vision.

The newly inaugurated apron extension represents a major step forward in enhancing the airport’s operational capability. The apron project was financed by Maldives Islamic Bank (MIB), with the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) serving as the contractor. Designed to support increased aircraft movements and improved ground handling efficiency, the expanded apron strengthens Maafaru International Airport’s capacity to accommodate growing private aviation activity alongside scheduled commercial operations, positioning the airport for its next phase of growth.

Further reinforcing this momentum, the event also marked the groundbreaking of the terminal building extension project, following the signing of the construction agreement by Island Aviation Services Limited in November 2025. The terminal building extension will significantly enhance passenger handling capacity and facilities, supporting improved arrival and departure flows while elevating the overall airport experience as international operations continue to expand.Maafaru International Airport’s development has unfolded steadily over recent years.

Commercial operations commenced in 2019, laying the foundation for growth that accelerated with the runway extension project funded by the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD). The extended 2,850-metre runway, officially inaugurated in July 2025, now enables the airport to accommodate larger aircraft and supports broader international connectivity. The introduction of Jet A-1 aircraft refueling services in 2023 further strengthened the airport’s operational readiness, enhancing reliability for both private and commercial operators.

Strategically located in Noonu Atoll, Maafaru International Airport has emerged as a key gateway supporting high-end tourism, private aviation, and regional development in the northern Maldives. Its continued expansion aligns with the Government of Maldives’ wider efforts to strengthen aviation infrastructure, diversify international gateways, and promote balanced regional growth. With sustained investment in critical infrastructure and strong partnerships with financial and construction stakeholders, Maafaru International Airport is poised to play an increasingly important role in supporting national connectivity and the country’s long-term economic ambitions.
