The Maldivian Government took a major step towards the development of tourism in the Northern parts of the Maldives by kickstarting a major project to develop the Hanimaadhoo International Airport in 2022. The project which was signed with JMC Projects (India) was set to develop the airport to handle international flights using aircraft like Airbus A320 and Boeing 737. With this development, guests visiting the Maldives will have an easier time connecting and exploring the Nothern parts of the Maldives, facilitating local as well as international tourism in this part of the Maldives.

At the time of the signing, the project was set to kickstart at the end of 2022, with the completion of the project being anticipated for 2024. By 2023, the project was already a success, as the developments reached 50 percent completion by August of the year.

And now, after a year-long hiatus, international flights have yet again resumed to Hanimaadhoo International Airport on the 16th of April 2024. The operations are expected to become more successful with the development project as the project includes the development of a 1,200-meter new runway to be developed. However, as of right now, operations are scheduled to take place twice a week.  With the project nearing its completion, Regional Airports Company (RACL) has stated that the remainder of the work for the new runway will be completed within the month of April.
