One thing about the holiday season in the Maldives when you are working in the tourism or hotel industry is the assurance of quality services to guests and the rewarding service charges to the resort staff.

As Maldives is one of the most highly sought destinations for holiday vacations such as Christmas, New Year or even Valentine’s Day, these holidays bring something special not only for the guests who enjoy their vacation in the beautiful Maldives but also for the employees who work extra hard during the season.

This year, following the high season, a local hotel chain took the Maldives by surprise after paying an exceptionally high service charge for a guest house property. Paying USD 420 per employee during December, Kaani Hotels received extremely positive reviews for acknowledging their employees’ hard work during the festive season by facilitating them the deserving rewards.

And while people usually expect resorts and guest houses to receive less staff following January, this February was also a high season for the Maldives as the tourist arrival rates remained high. And as February ended, four resorts in the Maldives marked their spot by paying USD 2,000 as a service charge, totalling over MVR 30,000, and Velaa Private island took the leading spot with a service charge of USD 2431.

Ritz Carlton Maldives was in a close second while Cheval Blanc Randheli took the third spot with USD 2,243 as their service charge. With four properties having paid USD 2,000 as a service charge eight other properties also paid an exceptional service charge of USD 1,000 and above.

So far into the year it appears that the industry is doing better than ever. This February alone, Maldives saw 177,914 visitors, which is the highest number of visitors the Maldives has seen in a month. With this, the total arrivals  for the year as at 7th March 2023 is 393,839.

As international airlines have started direct flights to the Maldives after months and years of borders being closed, it appears that tourists are fully taking advantage of the opportunity to finally take their dream trip to the country, and the industry staff are largely benefiting from it.
