On 15 October 2026, the Male' Water and Sewerage Company Pvt. Ltd. (MWSC) announced that a technical team from Flocean visited the Maldives this week to carry out sampling as part of the subsea desalination feasibility study
During this visit, water samples were taken from 500 m below sea level. According to MWSC, this is the clearest seawater the team has ever seen. According to MWSC, this enables them to carry out extensive laboratory testing to ensure the water meets the quality standards required for feed water.
FLOCEAN is a team known for harnessing the natural power and predictably clean water at depths of 400 to 600 meters, providing freshwater directly from the ocean without the environmental burdens typical of traditional desalination methods. An agreement was signed with Flocean and WaterConnect earlier this year to jointly prepare and structure a first-of-its-kind subsea desalination project in the Maldives, to deliver a sustainable, energy-efficient water supply to Malé and Hulhumalé.
