The President’s promise of a nationwide project to construct council buildings, which was announced in 2024 is finally coming to fruition as the Local Government Minister Adam Shareef announces that a team from China is expected to arrive in the Maldives in the coming month to conduct feasibility studies. This announcement was made by the minister in an interview with the local news.
This work, which is being done to strengthen the decentralisation system by giving more power to local island councils will see the development of 50 island council offices – which will be carried out in partnership with Chinese assistance. In addition to this, the Minister further revealed that an additional 55 island councils are also going to be developed through state funds.
To proceed with these developments, a letter of exchange was signed in May 2025 between the Government of the Maldives and the Chinese Government. According to the documents, the council offices will be built on the following islands:

- HDh. Kumundhoo, HDh. Neykurandhoo, and HDh. Vaikaradhoo
