President Dr Mohamed Muizzu establishes the Maldives Transportation Safety Board

This move by the President highly reflects the need for a dedicated Government agency to investigate incidents and accidents across the land, sea, and civil aviation sectors, to enhance the overall safety and security of the Maldives’ transportation system.

On 8th April 2025, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu established the Maldives Transportation Safety Board, which is set to operate under the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation. The decision that came into effect on the 8th of April is in line with Section 116 of the Constitution of the Republic of Maldives. 

This move by the President highly reflects the need for a dedicated Government agency to investigate incidents and accidents across the land, sea, and civil aviation sectors, to enhance the overall safety and security of the Maldives’ transportation system. With the Maldives having developed in recent years in terms of transportation, not only to cater to the increasing number of visitors but also the locals, there has been an increasing need for an agency to ensure the safety of the aviation and general transportation sector.

In addition to forming the board, the President’s Office also outlined the main functions of the board in a directive that was also issued on 8th April 2025. 

Works of the "Maldives Transportation Safety Board"

1. To investigate various incidents and accidents occurring in the field of road, sea and civil air transport in the Maldives and to identify the causes of such incidents.

2. To provide advice and technical assistance to the relevant authorities to strengthen transport safety standards and regulations based on the findings of investigations into various incidents and accidents occurring in the field of road, sea and civil aviation transport in the Maldives.

3. To provide advice and technical assistance to the relevant authorities to make necessary changes to the road, sea and civil air transport system of the Maldives for the sake of safety and security.

4. Conduct research and analysis to identify safety issues and trends in the field of road, sea and civil aviation in the Maldives.

5. To organize public hearings in connection with various incidents and accidents occurring in the field of road, sea and civil air transport in the Maldives.

6. To disseminate information and publish reports in connection with investigations of various incidents and accidents occurring in the field of road, sea and civil air transport in the Maldives.
