On 23 March 2026, in commemoration of World Water Day, the Male' Water and Sewerage Company Pvt. Ltd. (MWSC) highlighted key milestones achieved under ongoing government efforts to strengthen and safeguard water services across the Maldives.

Speaking on these developments, MWSC Managing Director Abdul Matheen Mohamed emphasized the progress of the HDh. Kulhudhuffushi Zero-Carbon Desalination Project. Initially inaugurated in 2025, the project aims to establish a fully solar-powered water generation system, eliminating reliance on diesel.

The project has now reached a significant milestone with the completion of its practical works. Following the testing phase, the system is expected to begin producing sufficient water to meet the island’s full demand without diesel from April onwards.

Key components of the project—including cable laying, photovoltaic (PV) steel structure construction, reverse osmosis (RO) plant installation, battery systems, and the completion of facility buildings—have progressed steadily. These developments mark a major step toward delivering a clean, energy-efficient desalination system that enhances long-term water security through sustainable innovation.

Highlighting this milestone, Managing Director Abdul Matheen noted that this will open up a new chapter in sustainable water supply in the Maldives, marketing a huge step forward towards the country's journey to sustainable development.
