Ministry of Economic Development signs agreement with MTCC to build a lacquer and craftsmanship training centre in Thulhaadhoo

This training centre will include spaces for training traditional craftsmanship such as lacquer, handicraft, weaving, and woodworking.

On 12 August 2025, the Ministry of Economic Development & Trade and Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) signed an agreement to build a Lacquer and Craftsmanship Training Centre in Baa atoll, Thulhaadhoo.

The agreement was signed by the Minister of State for Economic Development and Trade, Uz. Abdulla Siyaz, on behalf of the Ministry and the Managing Director of MTCC, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Retired), Ahmed Saudee, on behalf of the company.

This initiative underscores President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s vision to advance the creative economy and revive Maldivian heritage.

This training centre will include spaces for training traditional craftsmanship such as lacquer, handicraft, weaving, and woodworking.

This agreement was signed during the President’s tour of Baa Atoll’s inhabited islands.

This centre is being established in accodance with the Cabinet’s decision to establish a lacquer and handicraft training centre in B. Thulaadhoo, under the presidential pledge of the construction of a national level centre for lacquer and other Maldivian crafts.
