As the Maldives welcomes the peak of the rainy season for the year 2024, as well as the end of the year, the country is yet again faced with the age-old dilemma of road safety and health hazards that pedestrians and drivers alike are faced during the rainy season in Male’ City. Although different parts of the country face different circumstances during the rainy season such as flooding and damage to houses, especially ones built near the ocean, when it comes to Male’ City, travellers and locals are all too familiar with the lack of drainage on the roads.
With every rainy season, Male’ roads become heavily flooded - making it dangerous for pedestrians, drivers, and even the stray cats that call the streets home. As this issue has been persistent for such a long time with no resolution, the Government has set an aim to develop and fix the roads that cause the biggest issues during the rainy season. According to the Male’ City Council, the bench of the Government that has takenn up the works of fixing the city roads, the three roads that cause the most issues for citizens are the main roads ‘majeedhee magu’, ‘chaandhanee magu’, and ‘raiy-dhebaa magu’. With this, the City Council has stated that a survey has already been carried out as the first step of the work towards re-developing these roads. With this survey, the City Council is able to know the exact conditions of these roads, so that the problems can be faced head-on.
In addition to the survey and work that is set to be carried out on these roads by the Male’ City Council, the council has also set up a temporary drainage system in the western part of Mae’ City to make it easier to drain the flood waters.
