The Maldives Police Services has warned the public and businesses as fake payment slips have become the next big scam in the Maldives. In recent months, there has been an increase in scams and phishing links - which has resulted in many becoming victims and losing thousands to scammers. These scams, which so far have been calls and texts under the guise of important corporations such as the bank or Maldives Immigrants have now taken things up a notch in deceit to get free goods and services by providing fake payment slips.

According to the Maldives police, restaurants and local shops have been the main targets of these scamming tactics. This has become increasingly common as transferring and sending slips to shops and restaurants as proof of payment has become more commonly accepted than cash or card payments. With this, the police have advised businesses and citizens to stay vigilant of such scams and ensure that payment has been made by checking if the transaction went through via the banking application.

We have noticed that such slips are being sent especially in shops and restaurants after shopping in order to show proof of payment.

As such claims of fake payment slips have become more common in recent times, an investigation was made by the police which showed that a particular application was being used in order to fabricate the realistic-looking payment slips. Following yet another warning to stay vigilant, the Maldives Police Services has also advised anyone who has fallen victim to such a tactic to report the incident to the police as soon as possible.
