The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of the Maldives, Dr Abdulla Khaleel, addressed a roundtable session on “Common endeavours for a clean and sustainable future” today, at the sidelines of the fourth EU Indo-Pacific Ministerial Forum.
During his remarks, Minister Dr Khaleel emphasised the Maldives’ acute vulnerability to the adverse impacts of climate change and highlighted the country’s ambitious climate commitments under its third Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC). These include reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 1.52 million tonnes by 2035, generating 33 percent of electricity from renewable sources by 2028, and integrating climate resilience into national sustainable development planning.
Minister Dr Khaleel also underscored that international support for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) is not only a matter of equity but a strategic investment in global resilience. Minister praised the European Union’s climate initiatives, including the European Green Deal “Fit for 55” package, as key enablers for fostering international collaboration in addressing the climate crisis.
