In a move towards establishing a deeper relationship between the Maldives and Türkiye, a Maldives Embassy was set up in Türkiye on 14th April 2024. This historical step was celebrated alongside the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdulla Khaleel, Türkiye’s Minister of Culture and Tourism, Mehmet Nuri Ersoy, and Maldives Ambassador to Türkiye, Lieutenant General Retired Abdul Raheem Abdul Latheef.

The Maldives and Türkiye initially established a diplomatic relation in 1979 with President Erdoğan visiting the Maldives during his term in office as Prime Minister in 2005, following the earthwuake and tsunami that devastated the South East Asia in December 2004. Just three years later, the Maldives’ Foreign Minister at the time, H.E. Mr Abdulla Shahid made the first official visit to Türkiye on April 2008. Since then, Türkiye and the Maldives has had close ties, with Türkiye providing cntinious assistance to the Maldives. Diplomatic relations aside, Türkiye has also become one of the most sought out tourist destination among Maldivian travellers who are seeking to immerse in the food and diverse culture that Türkiye offers.

And now, having established a Maldives Embassy in Ankara, the Capital City of Türkiye will not only strengthen the bilateral relations between the nation, it will also help with providing consular and other services to Maldivians as well.
