Since October 7, 2023, the Israeli government's intensified assault on Gaza has sparked global outrage, with countless voices calling for justice and accountability. In solidarity with the Palestinian people, citizens across the Maldives have joined the international outcry—demanding not only an end to the violence, but also pressing for domestic policy changes to reflect the nation's support for Palestine.
In response to mounting public pressure—voiced through social media campaigns, public protests, and petitions—the Maldives has taken a historic step. On April 15, 2025, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu ratified the Third Amendment to the Maldives Immigration Act (Law No. 01/2007), following its approval during the 20th sitting of the People’s Majlis' first session of the year. The amendment grants authorities the legal power to prohibit the entry of individuals holding Israeli passports into the Maldives.
The President’s Office, in an official statement, described the ratification as a reflection of the Government’s unwavering stance against the ongoing atrocities and acts of genocide committed by Israel in Gaza. The move signals a clear alignment with the values and sentiments of the Maldivian people, who have continuously demonstrated solidarity with the Palestinian cause.
With this amendment, the Maldives joins other nations in the region, including Malaysia and Bangladesh, in barring Israeli passport holders from entry. The decision reinforces the Maldives' long-standing commitment to advocating for Palestinian rights and underscores the nation's resolve in standing against oppression.
