In a landmark development for healthcare accessibility and emergency response, the Maldives has launched its inaugural air ambulance service, spearheaded by the national carrier, Maldivian Airlines. This significant advancement comes as a fulfilment of a key pledge by the President of the Maldives, marking a pivotal moment in the nation’s commitment to enhancing the well-being of its citizens.

The introduction of air ambulance services by Maldivian Airlines represents a transformative step forward in medical evacuation and patient transport. By retrofitting one of its Dash 8 aircraft with the necessary medical equipment and supplies, the airline has ensured that critical care can be swiftly and safely delivered to patients in need. This innovation is especially crucial for the Maldives, where the geographical dispersion of islands can make timely access to tertiary medical facilities a challenge.

The customized air ambulance is staffed by a dedicated team of 15 healthcare professionals, including five doctors, five nurses, and five emergency medical technicians, all specially trained for medical air transport. This comprehensive crew ensures that patients receive the highest standard of care during transit, comparable to that of a mobile intensive care unit.

The service’s operational debut on March 2, 2024, saw the successful transportation of a patient from Kulhudhuhfushi to Malé City, demonstrating the efficiency and necessity of such a service in the Maldives. By enabling rapid transport to tertiary care hospitals, the air ambulance service mitigates the risks associated with sea travel or delays in accessing care, thereby potentially saving lives and improving health outcomes.
