On 19 August 2025, the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) and the Ministry of Sports, Fitness and Recreation signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to build fitness and recreation centres on 63 different islands of the Maldives.
This initiative, which is being carried forward in order to support a key pledge made by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu during the Presidential address. Emphasising that activity is vital for a happy life, President Dr Muizzu noted fitness and sports as particularly valuable fields, announcing that every inhabited island in the Maldives will have a well-equipped children's park, an outdoor gym for different age groups and a fully resourced fitness and recreation centre.
With MACL being handed over the tasl of building the fitness and recreation centres, the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) was also signed to develop outdoor gyms in 71 different islands.
