The Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has embarked on a significant community development initiative to strengthen sports and recreation infrastructure across the Maldives.
Throughout September 2025, MACL, in collaboration with the Ministry of Sports, Fitness, and Recreation and other government partners, held a series of groundbreaking ceremonies for new sports complexes and fitness centres in various islands.
This initiative aligns with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s vision to promote sports and community development, reflecting MACL’s growing role in supporting national development beyond airport operations.
- Haa Dhaalu Atoll Nolhivaram – 3 September 2025
An agreement was signed between MACL and the Ministry of Sports, Fitness, and Recreation on 03 September 2025, followed by the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Sports Complex in Haa Dhaalu Nolhivaram.
The event was attended by MACL’s CEO and MD, Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, Minister Abdulla Raafiu, MP for Hdh. Nolhivaram Mohamed Rasheed, and Vice President of the Hdh. Nolhivaram Council, Mohamed Hussain. This marked the official start of MACL’s sports infrastructure expansion drive.
- Faafu Atoll Bilehdhoo – 20 September 2025
On 20 September, a groundbreaking ceremony for a Sports Complex in Faafu Bilehdhoo was held, with CEO & MD Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, Minister Abdulla Raafiu, and Bilehdhoo Council President Areeh Ismail in attendance. According to the company, the project reaffirms MACL’s commitment to improving community well-being and creating spaces that encourage physical activity.
- Faafu Atoll Dharanboodhoo – 21 September 2025
The initiative continued the following day in Faafu Dharanboodhoo, where a Fitness and Recreation Centre project was officially launched. The ceremony was attended by CEO & MD Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, Minister Abdulla Raafiu, MP Fathimath Saudhaa, and Dharanboodhoo Council President Abdul Hameedh Adam. MACl noted that the development aims to create lasting value for the local community by providing enhanced facilities for recreation and fitness.
- Thaa Atoll Buruni – 23 September 2025
On 23 September, MACL held the groundbreaking ceremony of the Fitness and Recreation Centre in Thaa Buruni. The event saw the participation of CEO & MD Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, Minister of Finance and Planning Moosa Zameer, MP Hassan Waheed, and Th. Buruni Council President Adam Mohamed.
- Thaa Atoll Hirilandhoo & Vandhoo – 24 September 2025
Two groundbreaking ceremonies were held on 24 September, further extending the initiative within Thaa Atoll.
The Hirilandhoo Fitness and Recreation Centre groundbreaking was attended by CEO & MD Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, Minister Abdulla Raafiu, MP Ali Ashrag, and Th. Hirilandhoo Council President Mohamed Jalaal.
On the same day, the Vandhoo Fitness and Recreation Centre groundbreaking took place, with Minister Abdulla Raafiu, MP Ali Ashrag, and Council President Shiyaz Ibrahim joining MACL leadership. Both projects reflect MACL’s commitment to enhancing community facilities and promoting active, healthy lifestyles.
- Thaa Atoll Guraidhoo – 26 September 2025
The final ceremony of the month was held on 26 September in Thaa Guraidhoo, marking the start of the Guraidhoo Fitness and Recreation Centre project. The ceremony was attended by CEO & MD Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, Minister Abdulla Raafiu, MP Hanaan Mohamed Rasheed, and Th. Guraidhoo Council President Thaufeeq Ali.
This project, like the others, highlights MACL’s dedication to sustainable community growth and the development of local sports infrastructure.
