After just one week of the Chinese e-commerce platform Temu being launched in the Maldives through a collaborative effort with the Maldives Post, citizens are now being warned about the latest Temu-related scams being carried out on a local scale.
These scams come at a time when Temu has picked up its popularity in the Maldives, soon after its expansion to the country. Although Temu has been a popular website globally, the e-commerce platform is new to the Maldives, and shoppers are finally getting their chance to explore a new platform. It appears, however, that scammers have taken advantage of the excitement of the customers and created different scams pretending to be Temu.
The scams that the police have identified include phishing messages and emails that indicate that they are sent by Temu or the courier service, which typically include a link asking for personal or financial information. These messages, although not a new tactic, usually state that there is a problem with the order or that additional charges need to be paid. Once a customer clicks on the link, scammers can easily get into their bank accounts.
In addition to this, police have also notified citizens to stay wary of credit card scams. These scams are carried out on non-authentic websites or phishing emails and advertisements, and fraudulently obtain credit card information by claiming a payment problem, such as 2-D card scams. According to the local police, as 2-D cards do not require a two-factor or additional authentication process, these cards are easily targeted by scammers or fraudsters. With the lack of safety, as soon as users unknowingly fill out their card information on a phishing site, scammers can use this information to make online payments without further verification.
Although the police have made these warnings in regards to Temu in their most recent announcements, these warnings are also to be considered in general as scams have become more common in the Maldives as of late.
