Air quality in Greater Malé declines: index hits 156

As the air quality across the country continues to drop, with the air quality across the Greater Male’ area, the Health Protection Agency (HPA) has advised to take caution.

On the 19th of January 2025, the Air Quality Monitoring System placed at Maldives National University’s Centre for Maritime Studies campus in Vilimale’ showed that the air quality in the Greater Male’ area is at a dangerous level. The system showed that the current air quality index in Vilimale’ at 156, which is a risk to health.

While this is the air quality index that is showcased by the monitoring system for Vilimale’, the air quality across the Maldives does not reflect the same dangerous levels of pollution. According to the Air Quality Monitoring System’s data placed at Shaviyani Atoll Council and the Laamu Atoll Gan, the air quality for both these locations comes to 76 and 82, which is moderate, however, for those in sensitive groups of categories including children, the elderly, pregnant people, and people with cardiac and pulmonary diseases, with this level of air quality, some precaution is still advised. 

As the air quality across the country continues to drop, with the air quality across the Greater Male’ area, the Health Protection Agency (HPA) has advised to take caution such as limiting outdoor activities, wearing masks when going out, keeping windows and doors closed, and avoiding outdoor activities for those in high risk groups.
