One of the projects that has been on the news
time and time again has been the Great Male’ Connectivity project. Although
this has been one of the biggest projects to be started up in the Maldives, the
Thilamale’ connectivity bridge project has found itself in hot waters over the
past two years due to its slow pace as well as the hindrances that it has faced
since its inception.
Not only did people stop believing in the
eventual completion of the project as there was no physical evidence of the
project commencing for months, but there were one too many mishaps for the
public to ignore. With this, the bridge which is set to complete the connection
of the entire greater Male’ area was popular news once, but now people are just
waiting for the eventual completion of the project.
Although the starting up pace for the project
was extremely slow, there have been some recent new developments, which cast a
glimmer of hope for the project to be completed within the new given timeframe.
The Construction and Infrastructure Ministry of the Maldives has now revealed
that the project, which is being carried out in partnership with an Indian
company named AFCONS has now been completed by 33 percent, which is a 1.2
percent lead from the expected completion rate.
As the project completion was taking a slow
pace, causing major debate within the citizens of the Maldives on whether the
project will be completed or not, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu had made it part
of his Presidential vows to see the project to its completion during his term
in the office. Although the project was not being completed as per schedule
during the previous administration, it appears that the work has finally picked
up the pace and 33 percent has now been completed.
The project is set to be completed by
September 2026, and with the current pace, there is still hope for the GMC
project to be successfully completed within the given timeframe.
