Sri Lanka, the picturesque island nation neighbouring the Maldives, has long captivated travellers with its stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage. In recent years, however, it has emerged as a haven for budget-conscious adventurers seeking vibrant experiences without breaking the bank. Alongside destinations like Vietnam, Thailand, and Indonesia, Sri Lanka has become a beloved hotspot for those seeking affordable exploration.

Yet, amidst its growing popularity, a recent change in visa fees may present a hurdle for travellers hailing from countries without visa-free entry. Previously, a single-entry tourist visa could be obtained for a reasonable USD 50, granting a month-long stay in the country. However, the latest update mandates a six-month multiple-entry visa at a total cost of USD 100.77, effectively doubling the financial commitment for visitors.

This revision, while aiming to streamline entry processes, poses a challenge for budget travellers who may find the increased fee burdensome. Unlike competing destinations such as Thailand and Vietnam, which either offer free visas or levy substantially lower charges, Sri Lanka’s new visa policy may deter potential visitors.

It's worth noting that citizens of SAARC countries will continue to enjoy a 30-day visa-free entry, further emphasizing the contrasting treatment between neighbouring nations and others.

Within Sri Lanka's tourism sector, businesses have voiced concerns regarding the impact of the visa fee hike. They fear that the increased financial barrier may discourage tourists from choosing Sri Lanka as their destination, opting instead for more economically accessible alternatives.

Despite these challenges, Sri Lanka remains a treasure trove of experiences waiting to be explored. Its diverse landscapes, rich history, and warm hospitality continue to enchant travellers from around the globe.
