On Tuesday night, 30 September 2025, the city of Cebu in central Philippines was hit with a 6.9 magnitude earthquake, which has reportedly killed at least 53 people, injuring more than 150 people so far.
The earthquake was reported to have hit the city around 10 p.m. local time. Although the initial earthquake was reported at this hour by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, it was followed by a series of smaller aftershocks.
Due to the high impact of the earthquake, the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council of the country has reported that at least 22 pieces of infrastructure were also damaged, with three bridges and one road becoming impassable.
The authorities are currently working on restoring the communication facilities that have been damaged in some areas, while also working on delivering immediate relief supplies to highly impacted areas. While the country is no stranger to such natural occurrences, it appears that the aftermath of the earthquake has been exceedingly difficult to manage due to heavy rainfall and several bridges remaining impassable.
