Mount Lewotobi eruption disrupts Bali flights as alert level raised

Indonesia's volcanology agency has reported a major volcanic eruption, resulting in several flights to and from the resort island of Bali being cancelled or delayed. According to reports from the BBC, the eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki, known to be one of the country's most active volcanoes, resulted in an ash tower rising more than 11km into the sky at 17:35 local time on Tuesday.

Following the eruption, authorities have raised the highest alert levels and advised residents to avoid activities within a 7km radius around the crater, as a recent eruption in November 2024 resulted in the deaths of nine people and dozens of people getting injured. With this, people located in the district of Flores Timur are now to follow caution, as several airlines including Air India, Air New Zealand, Jetstar, Juneyao Airlines, Singapore Airlines and Virgin Australia have cancelled flights to and from Bali.

The volcanic eruption in November 2024 was also reported by the NASA Earth Observatory - noting that a powerful eruption which took place on 3 November 2024 sent host ashes as high as 2,000 meters into the air, some of which fell on several surrounding villages.
