In a significant diplomatic move, the President of the Maldives, President Muizz, recently embarked on an official trip to China, aimed at fostering collaboration and initiating transformative projects. The focal point of this historic visit was the Invest Maldives forum, where a total of 20 agreements were signed, outlining the shared commitment to advancing the Maldives through strategic collaborations with China.
Among the key agreements signed is a groundbreaking initiative seeking Chinese assistance for the Maldivian government's ambitious housing projects in Fushidhiggaru Falhu. The reclamation for this project was officially inaugurated in December of 2023, making it one of the first projects to be set off following the President’s inauguration which is targeted towards providing housing for all.
As this is one of the biggest problems faced in the Maldives, especially in the City area, the development of the Fushidhiggaru Falhu housing project became a major project which was started out within the first 100 days, with the reclamation set to be completed within eight months with the partnership of Urbanco. With this, the housing sector is set for a significant transformation with the construction of 31,500 housing units in Fushidhiggaru Falhu, demonstrating the commitment to addressing the country's growing housing needs.
The comprehensive plan also includes the further development of the Vellana International Airport (VIA), with an emphasis on enhancing infrastructure and capacity. President Muizzu's vision for the Velana International Airport is particularly noteworthy, as he recently launched a plan to increase the number of passengers served to 25 million annually. This is yet another crucial step that is being taken towards the development of the tourism sector as well as a major motivation towards the completion of the Velana International Airport Development project that has been ongoing for the past few years.
Additionally, the redevelopment of meat processing factories and the modernization of roads in Male' and Vilimale' are integral components of the comprehensive development agenda.
