Kashmir attack: tensions continue to escalate between India and Pakistan
The police in Anantnag district have issued a notice, naming three out of the four suspected gunmen behind the attacks — identifying two of the men as Pakistani and the third as a local Anantnag man.
Tensions have escalated between India and Pakistan yet again, following the massacre of 26 tourists in the disputed Himalayan Kashmir region on 22 April 2025. According to The Guardian, the attack resulted in the death of 25 Indian tourists and one Nepalese citizen, which has sparked yet another conflict in the long-ongoing rivalry between India and Pakistan.
Although Pakistan has denied any involvement in the attack that has now escalated tensions, it is being reported that a newly identified Islamic militant group that is going by the name ‘Resistance Front’ has claimed responsibility for the attack. The tension continues to escalate quickly as India downgraded diplomatic ties, suspended the decade-old Indus Waters Treaty, which would have a huge impact on Pakistan’s hydropower and irrigation needs, and has also revoked all visas issued to Pakistani nationals. In retaliation, Pakistan has also expelled a number of Indian diplomats, stopped the visas issued to Indian nationals, and ordered the closure of borders, cancellation of trade and the closure of airspace to Indian-owned or Indian-operated airlines.
Pakistan declares the Indian defence, naval and air advisers in Islamabad persona non grata. They are directed to leave Pakistan immediately. Any threat to Pakistan’s sovereignty and to the security of its people will be met with firm reciprocal measures in all domains.
Statement from the office of the Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif.
As India has yet again accused Pakistan of the ‘cross-border terrorism’ attack, the decades-long rivalry has neighbouring nations concerned, as the two countries do not appear to want to back down from the fight. Although the latest attacks have sparked a new fear for citizens of both nations, the Kashmir conflict dates back to 1947, with the region being a flashpoint for multiple wars and tensions since the partition of British India.
By 24 April 2025, the police in Anantnag district have issued a notice, naming three out of the four suspected gunmen behind the attacks — identifying two of the men as Pakistani and the third as a local Anantnag man. According to reports from the BBC, in order to increase efforts to find the suspects, the police have offered a USD 23,400 reward for information on each suspect.
BBC additionally reported that the Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has cut his visit to Saudi Arabia short, following the attack, returning to India to bring justice to the Kashmir attack.
Those behind this heinous act will be brought to justice… They will not be spared! Their evil agenda will never succeed. Our resolve to fight terrorism is unshakeable and it will get even stronger.
