On Tuesday, 18 November 2025, Cloudflare, a prominent company that offers robust security features to protect websites from various threats worldwide, reported an outage, causing thousands to be temporarily blocked from accessing major platforms.
In addition to international platforms such as X and ChatGPT being down, the Bank of Maldives (BML) and the Maldives Islamic Bank (MIB) were also inaccessible to the public in the Maldives.
In a statement, BML reported that due to the Cloudflare service interruptions, customers were facing difficulties accessing the bank's internet, mobile banking services, as well as access to the bank's website.
Just a few hours after the shortage was reported, Cloudflare managed to restore full services. According to the company, the outage was caused by an automatically generated configuration file, designed to manage potential security threats. Cloudflare stated that the file grew too large and led to the software crashing the software system handling traffic for several Cloudflare services.
