Letter of Exchange signed to initiate the design phase of the Vilimale’ China-Maldives Friendship Hospital project

At an official ceremony held today at Dharumavantha Hospital, the Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure, Dr. Abdulla Muththalib, and the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to the Republic of Maldives, H.E. Mr. Kong Xianhua, signed the Letter of Exchange to initiate the detailed design phase of the Vilimale’ China-Maldives Friendship Hospital Project.

The signing ceremony which took place on 4 June 2025, was also attended by the Minister of Health, Mr. Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim, along with senior government officials and representatives from the Embassy of China in the Maldives. 

According to the Ministry of Construction, Housing, and Infrastructure of the Maldives, the feasibility study for the 112-bed capacity hospital has been completed, and today’s ceremony marks the official commencement of the project's detailed design phase. This project is also set to further strengthen the relationship between the Maldives and China as Ambassador Kong emphasized how the name given to the hospital will symbolise strong bilateral ties between the two countries.

Upon completion, the hospital is expected to be the largest and most advanced medical facility in the country. The construction work for the project is expected to being in early 2026, following the completion of the design phase and the contractor selection is completed.
