In a significant move to improve access to specialised medical care in the Greater Malé Region, Hulhumalé Hospital has officially launched a wound care clinic on April 17, 2025. The clinic—aptly named Wound Care—will operate on Tuesdays and Thursdays, offering targeted treatment for one of the most frequent yet often overlooked medical concerns: wounds caused by accidents and chronic conditions.
The introduction of this clinic is expected to ease the burden on other major hospitals in the capital, including Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), where emergency departments are often overwhelmed by patients with both minor and serious injuries. By diverting wound-related cases to a specialised unit, hospitals can focus more effectively on critical and complex procedures.
Wound Care at Hulhumalé Hospital is equipped with modern dressing materials and treatment options tailored specifically for wound management. This includes both acute injuries—such as those caused by road and household accidents—and chronic wounds that typically affect patients with underlying health conditions like diabetes. For diabetic patients, especially those experiencing delayed wound healing in the legs or feet, early intervention is critical. The availability of this specialised service can prevent complications and reduce the risk of severe infections or prolonged hospitalisation.
Urban areas like the Greater Malé Region experience a high rate of accidents due to dense population and daily congestion. As a result, patients often end up in crowded emergency rooms, enduring long waiting hours for treatments that could be handled more efficiently in a dedicated clinic. The Wound Care clinic is designed to address this gap by providing quicker, more precise medical attention.
The clinic was inaugurated in a ceremony held at Hulhumalé Hospital, attended by the CEO of the Malé City Group of Hospitals, Ibrahim Haleem. The launch marks the first time a hospital in the city has established a clinic solely dedicated to wound care, representing a focused effort to improve day-to-day healthcare services and patient outcomes.
