In a landmark development for the Maldives’ healthcare sector, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu officially inaugurated the long-awaited Darumavantha Hospital on November 16, 2024. After five years of operation at a limited capacity, the tertiary-level hospital is now fully operational, symbolizing a significant step forward in delivering advanced medical services to Maldivians.

The inauguration ceremony saw the official handover of the hospital’s registration and operating license, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the 25-storey facility. Originally constructed during the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen, the hospital has undergone renovations and introduced a range of specialized services, positioning it as a beacon of progress in the nation's healthcare landscape.

Darumavantha Hospital now offers several state-of-the-art services designed to address critical healthcare needs in the Maldives. The fertility centre provides a wide range of reproductive health services, including Intrauterine Insemination (IUI), In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), and options for egg, sperm, and embryo freezing. These advancements make fertility treatments more accessible to Maldivian families, reducing the need to travel abroad for such services. The children’s emergency room caters exclusively to patients under the age of 16, ensuring young patients receive focused and timely care. It features specialized treatment areas and an isolation room for managing infectious diseases, ensuring a safer and more efficient pediatric healthcare environment.

Equipped to handle life-threatening conditions such as heart attacks and neurological emergencies, the hybrid catheterization lab is a cutting-edge addition to the hospital. This facility enables swift diagnosis and intervention for cardiovascular and neurological diseases, potentially saving countless lives.

The launch of Darumavantha Hospital is a game-changer for the Maldives’ healthcare system. With its expanded services and modern facilities, the hospital is expected to significantly enhance healthcare accessibility and efficiency. For years, many Maldivians have travelled abroad for specialized treatments. With services like IVF and advanced cardiac care now available locally, the hospital will reduce the need for expensive medical travel, saving both time and resources for patients and their families. The children’s emergency room and hybrid cath lab are designed to provide faster, more effective responses to critical conditions, reducing the risk of complications and fatalities.

The inauguration of Darumavantha Hospital reflects the government’s broader goals of improving public services and enhancing the quality of life for its citizens.
