The Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) has announced that applications for the 2026 MMA Research Fund grant are open starting today,23 September 2026. The research fund will provide proposals for independent research grants and book writing grants. The total amount allocated for this grant is Rs. 5 million.
These grants aim to encourage scientific research and the writing of research papers and books that support evidence-based policy-making, specifically to encourage innovative, high-quality research to promote domestic economic and financial stability.
The fund is open to individuals, educational institutions and think tanks. According to the MMA, the teams submitted to the fund must be led by an individual with a master's degree or higher. The authority encourages PhD holders to apply for the fund.
The research grant will focus on the MMA's objectives and areas of greatest need to the country. However, research grants can also be applied for in other areas. Some of the areas identified by the authority are;
• Economic stability, monetary policy, and inflation dynamics
• Financial prudence, legislation, and inventions
• Digitization, fintech, and financial participation
• Tourism and sustainable economy
• Islamic finance and sustainable development
• Job market and education
• Housing, Urban Development and Spatial Economics
• Health, public spending, and social security
The MMA Research Fund was launched at the authority's research conference in December. Applications for the MMA Research Fund are open until 13 October. Applications for the research fund will be made through the MMA Research Fund Portal.
