It appears that the green initiative has reached countries all over the globe as the younger generation has managed to push Government authorities to take the environment and sustainability more seriously. In the Maldives, sectors ranging from tourism to agriculture have been learning new ways to become more sustainable and mindful of the environment with new practices such as ecotourism and eco-farming.
However, it is not only the people and private industries taking eco-friendliness more seriously as the Government of the Maldives has been putting in more effort to introduce environmentally friendly practices into new Government projects and initiatives.
One of the biggest movements towards this was started when the Environment Ministry announced their plans to phase out the ban of single-use plastic an effort to completely stop the usage of single-use plastic in the Maldives.
With that in mind, another movement towards an eco-friendly Earth has been the embracement of plants and nature globally. While most people discovered their love for planting, gardening and nature in general due to being confined to the four walls of their homes during COVID-19, the trend of planting appears to have become a big part of most people's lives since then.
With this trend, the Male’ City council also put in some effort to make Male’ greener by kick-starting a program to plant 100,000 trees in Male’ City in January 2022.
And now, even the most concrete cities have been putting in the effort to introduce greenery to the scene for the betterment of people's peace of mind as well as to create a more sustainable future for the coming generations.
One such effort being made in the Maldives is the establishment of an environment committee by the Male’ City Council. This council was established on the 1st of June 2022 with the initiative of strengthening environmental protection in the council's projects and programs and taking measures to make Male’ City greener and more eco-friendly.
The Male' City Council Mayor officially opened the 'Male' Fehi' plant store on October 8, 20222, in an effort to encourage the public to buy plants, support the initiative to plant 100,000 trees, and encourage everyone to make Male' a greener place.
In addition to various plants, the store stocks 25 gardening products that are available for purchase by the general public.
