Heavy rainfall is expected in the next 72 hours

Although the Maldives has been experiencing the tropical sunny weather that so many travel to the country to experience, monsoon season is finally at its peak as Male’ city is expected to experience heavy rainfall for the coming 72 hours. 

According to Al Jazeera weather reports, Male’ City is expected to experience a month’s worth of rain in the next 72 hours. In addition to Male’, it appears that the weather is similar around the greater Male’ area as light drizzles were experienced all day in Hulhumale’. In addition to these forecasts by the Al Jazeera news, the Maldives meteorological office (MET) is also forecasting heavy rainfall for the upcoming five days with the alert ranging from white alert to yellow alert. With this, the MET office also warns of strong winds as well as rough seas in the coming days.

The rainfall in Maldives varies from month to month. In the west, for example, it can receive 500-600 mm in May. In the dry months, it can reach 100 mm in January or February.

On August 9th, 2024 the MET office reported August 11th as the expected date for the southwest monsoon season to be active. With this, the office also reported to expect widespread rain accompanied by thunderstorms, and gusty winds reaching up to 40 to 45 miles per hour in the upcoming days. As of 2 hours ago, the office reports yellow alerts extending from Haa Alif Atoll to Alif Dhaal Atoll and orange warning for torrential rain and possible flooding from Haa Alif Atoll to Shaviyani Atoll.
