Even with all the technological developments around the globe, one of the biggest barriers to people embracing technical advancements has always been the language barrier. Whether we log into an application, onto social media or dial into a help desk there are certain limitations when it comes to language choices.

Despite the fact that the majority of people in the Maldives speak the indigenous language, "Dhivehi," most applications and even most digital support desks only provide English as a language option.

When it comes to people who prefer to read and write in Dhivehi or the elder generation who struggle with the language barrier, this has been one of the major impediments to receiving information or even aid.

However, it does appear that times have changed and Maldives might be embracing the Dhivehi language when it comes to applications. On October 25, 2022, Ooredoo Maldives upgraded and relaunched their first-ever Artificial Intelligence (AI) powered digital care assistant “Evee”, which is designed to interact with customers in the Dhivehi language.

Customers can now get help through ‘Evee’ to check data, send SMS, and interact with the Ooredoo customer service in Dhivehi by simply dialling 929 and choosing Dhivehi language as their preferred by pressing 1.

While Evee is still in the first stages of learning how to interact with customers in Dhivehi, the AI will learn and develop how to properly interact in the language through the interactions she has with customers on a daily basis.

“And in line with our mission, today we are proud to upgrade our already existing AI-powered digital assistant Evee to enable Dhivehi interactions, increasing accessibility and inclusiveness of acquiring our services to all our customers. As a global brand that heavily prioritizes localization within every market Ooredoo operates, we are also delighted to officially launch our very own Dhivehi font. This beautiful new font enables us to prioritize communications in Dhivehi and connect better with customers while ensuring that our communications portray the essence of our brand identity,”
CEO and Managing Director of Ooredoo Maldives Khalid Al-Hamadi

This new launch by Ooredoo might simply be the next advancement in the Maldivian digital sector, as Evee is already in the learning phase. Such advancements are undoubtedly essential to bridging the language gap and enabling more individuals to access information and learn without hesitation.
