MWSC — World Water Day

MWSC

According to reports by the United Nations (UN), one out of nine people around the world are without access to clean water,; depriving them of their human right to a healthy life. This year, World Water Day will bring focus to this struggle, to remind people of the importance of access to clean water, with the theme ‘Groundwater: Making the Invisible Visible.’

Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) has always been at the forefront of celebrating World Water Day each year, and this year they have got multiple activities and campaigns planned to this effect. They will be touching upon subjects such as the importance of clean, drinking water, importance of sustainable development of facilities, the importance of not wasting water, as well as awareness in the general public about the level of quality of water being provided by the MWSC water supply.

The water supply being provided by MWSC is the product of cutting edge technology in water desalination and purification, which is also proven to be cleaner and safer than the global standards for drinking water. The quality of the water is constantly tested and monitored — being tested at least once a day through samples taken from different sections of the water supply network. The sixth Sustainable Development Goal for 2030 by the UN is safe, clean drinking water for all, and MWSC strives to reach that goal constantly.

To achieve this goal, MWSC has setup two more desalination plants across the country, applying the principle of decentralisation to their plans as well. On top of that, to further strengthen the network in the Greater Malé Region, MWSC has lain pipelines along the Sinamalé bridge to conjoin the Hulhumalé and Malé water supply networks, while currently in the process of adding on further storage tanks in both areas. Furthermore, with sustainability in mind, MWSC employs the use of sustainable energy for the running of at least three of their facilities, with the intention of expanding the use of renewable energy across the board in time.

Since its conception in 1995, MWSC has been striving to both promote and sustain the development of the Maldives and Maldivians in terms of sustainable services and clean water access as well as clean, safe, sewerage systems. The fact that the Maldives is not naturally blessed with abundant fresh water access has not been a limiter for MWSC, having provided nigh uninterruptible water supply for decades. Given the volatility of access to water, especially due to climate change, MWSC strives to constantly improve and expand services across the country in terms of sewerage systems development as well as water purification plants.

With over 26 years of engineering experience, MWSC is truly one of the biggest local companies providing technical and advanced support in the nation, and to this effect MWSC holds a stake in a lot of local island development programs. The aim by MWSC is to continue providing their service as they always have, to further expand their scope, and to be the shining example in locally driven, innovative, and sustainable humane work in the Maldives.
