On 13 May 2026, the Health Protection Agency announced that two cases of measles had been reported in the Maldives. Since then, HPA has been advising the general public to take precautions, as measles was previously eradicated in the Maldives in 2018 with a few isolated cases over the years.
However, with two reported cases in one month, HPA has now put out information that may be important for the general public, such as vaccination centres in the Greater Male' Region and the symptoms of measles.
Vaccination Centres in Greater Male' Region
- Senahiya Military Hospital
- Hulhumale' Hospital GP Clinic (H16)
- Urban Primary Healthcare Centre (Maafannu)
Vaccination Centres in Atolls
- All regional hospitals, atoll hospitals, and health centres
In addition to this, Indira Ghandi Memorian Hospital (IGMH) has now set up a help desk for ations who are coming in with symptoms such as red rashes or fevers. The help desk, which can be located near the ambulance portico, outside the main emergency room has been set-up explicitly to help patients showing symptoms of measles. With the help-desk operating everyday from 8am to 11pm, patients showing symptoms have been adbiced to wear masks when visiting the hospital.
Over the past few days, HPA has also taken to its official X account to spread awareness regarding the common and early symptoms of measles which include cold, fever, redness of the eye, cough, and red spots and rashes which typically originate on the face and neck; subsequently spreading to the chest, back, arms, and legs.
HPA also noted that an infected individual can transmit the virus to others starting from four days before the rashes appears until four days after its onset.
With this, HPA has advised any person showing symptoms of measles to seek medical attention immediately without further delay.
